Tummy Tuesday Food Blog Hop

Thug Kitchen 101: Fast as F*ck
This cookbook starts out with a great quote by Julia Child :

“I was 32 when I started cooking; up until then, I just ate.”

hmmm.  Thinks about it.  I’m still eating

This cookbook promises “more than 100 easy and accessible recipes to give you a solid start toward a better diet.  All of the meals in these pages are guaranteed to be faster than delivery, so you can cook up a damn fine dinner with simple ingredients regardless of when you stumble home from work.”

I like that word “easy.”  However the book should come with a warning label: “if you don’t like the f— word, you won’t get past the first page.” I didn’t notice it at first but it’s even in the title: Thug Kitchen 101: Fast as F*ck . The “U” is discreetly covered up with a bit of macaroni. The authors use the word casually, dropping it in often. Maybe it’s to make the vegetarian cooking more manly or more funny?

They also have a website Thug Kitchen with recipes and podcasts.  This is vegetarian that pops the taste buds with stuff like Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos. Carnitas tacos are usually pork tacos but not this shredded meat — it’s just jackfruit. The recipe is from two guests featured on a Thug Kitchen podcast; chefs Chad and Derek Sarno served up this tasty bit from their own cookbook The Wicked Healthy Cookbook: Free. From. Animals.

Their first chapter is a rallying call to cook because it’s healthier with all the salt and sugar prepared foods present.  They tell you to just go to the produce section and ignore the rest of the grocery store saying “Eating plants, not boxed bullshit dressed up in salt and sugar, is one of the easiest ways to take control of your plate…”

#AtoZChallenge 2019 Tenth Anniversary badgeI do like the way they mix the why you should eat healthy with the hit-you-in-the-head bluntness of a best friend as in this passage on sugar, “Sugar has the same effect on the palate as salt, so we crave sweeter and sweeter stuff to achieve the same kind of satisfaction that we used to get from a ripe peach. This has gotten out of hand and we gotta take control of what goes into our food before we start just licking salt and sugar off rocks like a bunch of goddamn goats. It’s not a good look.”

Even though  the instructions might be a bit unorthodox “saute that shit” with fun asides, the recipes read rather tasty like the Coconut-Lime rice.  You heat 2T coconut oil and then add 2 cups of brown rice that you saute.  Next stir in lime zest, then add the garlic and 4 cups of vegetable broth to simmer the rice in for 35 minutes.  I’ve never heard of sauteing rice when it’s hard, before you cook it in liquid to puff it up.  At the end you add the lime juice and cilantro after it’s cooked.  It sounds pretty tasty, don’t you think?

I checked the book out from the library but I think it’s pretty cool despite the cussing. That doesn’t bother me although I can see some people who would be bothered. They have a practical approach to vegetarianism — it’s ok to buy frozen veggies to save time but don’t you dare look at the frozen meals. The majority of the dishes take between 30-50 minutes to make. Don’t believe the time on the recipes — they don’t include chopping times.  Maybe they are super speedy at slicing and dicing but I am not.

  1. I prefer “Retreat: The Joy of Conscious Eating” by Daniel Jardim 🙂 As a vegetarian, his book made more sense for someone who likes to experiment in the kitchen.

Ronel visiting with the A-Z Challenge music and writing: Sweet Country

  2. Easy recipes are the best and no meat meals are most welcome when it’s hot outside. That rice sounds really good.

Have a fabulous Tasty Tuesday. ♥

    1. I think the rice sounds great too. It seems like cooking with coconut oil is becoming a thing now.

Hope you’re having a great weekend

      1. I’ve not done that yet, but I will at some point. We are heading to visit a friend that was just put in Hospice yesterday. Not a happy day for us, but something that needs to be done. 🙂

        1. I am very sorry. It’s difficult when it’s that time. Hopefully they will be comfortable and it’s cool that you’re going to visit.
