Sabi Saturday, Week 20

Sabi Saturday Linkup Week 20

Show how you love, treasure, reuse or creatively transform things that may be a bit worn but nevertheless is still useful/beautiful and have character or history.

As you know while I post on Saturdays, the blog hop is open for the whole week so feel free to share any time during the week. Add your link at the bottom of the post. I do moderate the links to avoid spam so it may take up to 24 hours for the link to show.

  • the vintage/antique items handed down or we “rescue” from garage sales and thrift stores so they don’t end up in a trash bin
  • items we’ve upcycled instead of throwing them away
  • items we’ve repaired in a transformative way to make them more beautiful or cooler than before
  • process or tutorials on how we upcycled or repaired something to make something new, more beautiful, or cooler

Sabi Saturday Linkup Week 19 Roundup

First the roundup of 2020 from Week 19 posted the week of February 8th, 2020:

15andMeowing  shared a cute stuffed smurf she’s had since childhood.

Cactus Catz showed some of her mom’s punch needlework.

This week’s my Sabi Saturday contribution:

I think of stone as particularly Sabi because of how old they are unless they have a fossil or something in them that can help us date them.  Often we don’t really think about how old a stone is. Tucson has an annual Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase event.  The event is happening all around the city.  I’ve always wanted to go so I went to the 22nd Street location as it’s pretty easy to get to by bus.  It was pretty cool.  I bought a stone bracelet, a jade dragon pendant, a fossil pendant and a fossil ringbox.

It seems pretty incredible to me that the fossil ringbox — admittedly small, only about 2″ in diameter and about 2 1/4″ high — was only $6.  The pendant was about the same price. The fossil is the orthoceras. The orthoceras is a nautiloid cephalopod — the same family as the octopus, squid and nautilus. These cephalopods lived 400 million years ago at the end of the Silurian and beginning of the Devonian Periods.  It seems incredible to me that a little 400 millions-years-old “squid” has been repurposed as a box. (And yes, you can find orthoceras on Amazon or Ebay but if you want one, I would recommend going to your local rock store as each fossil is unique and a little different although the overall segmented look is very similar. Prices vary a lot with fossils.  Affiliate disclosure in sidebar.)

And the other cool thing was there was a Takoyaki food truck at the event.  I love them! I hadn’t had any since I left Japan.  They often have them at matsuris (festivals).  What is a Takoyaki?  They are octopus balls — bits of octopus cooked in batter.  Yummy!  The funny thing is they cost the same as the box — $6.  In 400 million years, the price of octopus has not changed.  (laughing)

The next image by Antonov from Wikimedia Commons shows a sketch of how the orthoceras looked when alive, how it looks when originally found in rock and when polished like the one I have.

And naturally because I love cats, I thought this saber-toothed tiger fossil near the entry was awesome!  Look at those teeth!
