Wordless Wednesday : Eagle Mural on Craycroft, Tucson

Mena Iwa Jima Mural on Craycroft, Tucson, photography by M. LaFreniere, all rights reserved

Luis Mena’s Iwo Jima mural on 1537 Craycroft Rd., Tucson, AZ. Painted 2007 on Miller’s Surplus which closed this location a few years ago.  I hadn’t even noticed MIller’s left.  It was there forever.  Then Transmissions Unlimited had this location but it looks like it’s up for lease again. Murals sometimes get painted over when there is a new owner so here’s hoping they keep it.

(Yeah, I know Wordless Wednesdays is supposed to be … you know …. Wordless!  but i thought a few wouldn’t hurt. Honestly I was just surprised that Miller’s Surplus was gone and that it had been a different business altogether and I hadn’t noticed. The Tucson Citizen noted that some of Luis Mena’s older murals have been painted over which is what happens when a business changes hands.  One way to preserve murals is through photographs and there is a Tucson Murals Project for people to add a photograph in when they spot a new mural.)

You can use the search engine to do a search on Amazon as I did with “wwii nose art book”. Nose art is another type of WWII memorial art. Search results will vary. Like today I’m a little surprised that World War II Nose Art in Color (Enthusiast Color Series) did not show up. You just never know. 1. From the comments that people have made, I do think our murals hold up better over time in Arizona due to our low rainfall.

        1. I don’t know about less pollution. Maybe depends on what city you’re comparing it to. Most everyone drives here because of the heat — it’s hard to wait for a bus. Although I think things are changing a little because now that I’m taking the bus, I’ve noticed more people are taking the bus. the buses are starting to run more often too during the week day starting in August. Hope more people ride. But it’s not like Chicago. My family drove through their once when I was a kid and you could see the pollution hovering around the city. It was crazy.

  1. I often do words with my Wordless Wednesday posts. I’m a rule breaker too.

Beautiful mural. Some folks are so very talented.

Hope you had a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥

    1. I agree some people are very talented. It would be so cool to be able to paint a mural.

Hope you’re having a great weekend, preferably on the water

    1. Thank you for sharing the murals. They are amazing. anyone reading the comments, do go over and look at them. Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic did some very cool murals in Georgetown, Penang.

  2. We have a number of murals on buildings here, but they all are of an old historical Northwest theme–logging, etc. People don’t seem to paint them over, though a number could use a touch up. Yours probably hold up well in the drier climate or is it dryer climate? How about dry climate. The colours are popping on your mural.

    1. Yes, I agree. I think the fact we don’t have as much rain means our murals may last longer than other places — if they don’t get painted over. That’s cool that you guys have a historical Northwest theme going. Is there any particular mural in town that you like a lot?

        1. well, up early in Los Gatos but not so much here in Tucson. It’s hot here in the day so I tend to stay up later when it’s cooler.
