Monday Mural : Greetings from Tucson

Monday Mural : Greetings from Tucson

Victor Ving and Lisa Beggs go around the country painting the “Greetings from” mural series. Lisa explained on their website, “The beginning is when we really tried to do a KickStarter and get sponsors, but we failed at both of those things. We didn’t want to wait around to get someone else’s approval so we took a huge risk purchasing an RV and packing life into it. Leaving a few items in storage at Victor’s Queens apartment, we drove away from New York City in April of 2015. The original goal was to last one year on the road, but now painting and traveling the USA is our life indefinitely.”

Ving and Beggs often ask a local muralist to paint one of the letters.  Rock Martinez painted the letter C for the Tucson mural.

For Tucson, they used the following icons

Letter Guide:

T — University of Arizona
U — Saguaro cacti
C — Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by local Tucson artist, Cyfi
S — Hotel Congress, John Dillinger
O — San Xavier del Bac, Man in the Maze
N — Sonoran hot dog

Below they created a video of making the mural on Miller’s Surplus.  The music is a local band called “Los Nawdy Dawgs”, with one of the band members being George Landa of Miller’s Surplus.

Many times cities, local groups or businesses will commission them for a mural.  In the case of Tucson, they put up a Go Fund Me page which raised about $200.  While they painted, passerbys also left money.  A mural costs about two thousand dollars usually.

  1. I have seen this mural but could not recall where. It’s fun to learn about how it was created and who the artists were. I love how they live in their RV and travel around painting. I am researching RV living myself and it sounds amazing. Thanks for a fun post. There is a geocache at that mural, by the way, in the phone pole nearby.

    1. Thank you! I’m happy you enjoyed it and that it fit in with Awww Mondays.

Hope you’re having a great weekend!
