Tummy Tuesdays : Soup

So in went

  • marjoram
  • tarragon
  • cilantro
  • bay leaves.
  • Red, orange and yellow bell peppers
  • red onion
  • carrots
  • scallions
  • garlic
  • salad mix of three greens: kale and two other. forget now what.
  • roma tomatoes
  • a meyer lemon
  • an edible flower

I forget what else. Pour in water.  Let it cook until the flavors mesh.  It was amazingly good.  And like all soups, better on the second day.  Looks puzzled. I think it was the lemon that gave it the extra little kick in flavor.

I just realized the problem with garbage soup.  Sometimes when it comes out ridiculously tasty, you don’t know how to make it again for company.  There’s no recipe.  It’s an accidental soup made out of whatever was in the fridge that needed to be used up sooner rather than later. I don’t even remember everything I threw in it.

Oh well, it was good while it lasted (4 days). Each day it got yummier.  That is the real secret to soup.  Heat it up daily. Add something new everyday just to have something a bit crunchy inside.  Add water if needed.  Something happens as it cooks each day.  The flavors meld and become something unique.  It’s really interesting.

Now if only I could duplicate it, I could call myself a cook.

    1. Don’t knock it ’til you try it, lol. Sandee said they call it Icebox Soup. What do you think of that name?

    1. Yeah, my friend told me I need another name because “garbage soup” just won’t make the bestseller titles. Of course, with my warped sense of humor, now I think it would be fun to make a cookbook called garbage soups, lol.

        1. Awww, there goes my dreams of being a bestselling cookbook author! (Pinkie and Midnight are ecstatic I’m won’t be a bestselling author — they dread the traveling that goes with book touring. Even if I promise them catnip everyday, they say “do you think we can be bought that easily? Traveling is for the dogs.”)

    1. Icebox soup is an awesome name. I think I’ll borrow it. I’m making another one. I was going to make ratouille but then I noticed I needed to use my cabbage up and well, then in went the broccoli and there went the ratouille.

Hope you’re having a great weekend and are out on the water if it’s sunny.

  1. Yay, I just posted the recipe for my Sopa Tarasca a few days ago! I use the euphemism “Empty the Refrigerator Soup” for “Garbage Soup” and when I make a batch, I write down what is going in the pot, as you said, just in case serendipity happens.

    1. Oh when I said that sounds great, I meant it’s a great idea to write down what goes in the pot.
